Nigeria, Papua New Guinea
Sandra was a young honours philosophy graduate from Saskatchewan when she first volunteered with Cuso International. The thoughtful 20-year-old began her placement in Nigeria teaching English composition and remedial reading in a university preparation program at a college in Kana. After two years, Sandra wanted to reach more poor and marginalized communities so she transferred to a rural posting, where she trained future primary school teachers.
In 1977, Sandra returned to Cuso International, taking on a two-year placement to promote appropriate technology in Papua New Guinea.
With twin passions for learning and for children, Sandra earned her M.A. in Counselling Psychology and worked as a teacher, elementary school counsellor and Registered Play Therapist. She was actively involved in feminist and peace organizations and had a deep, lifelong love of music.
Sandra passed away on March 29, 2008.
