Paula and Bert Powell
Paula and Bert Powell first heard of Cuso International volunteer opportunities through their daughter, Kelley Powell, who did a placement in Laos. Having visited her in Laos, Bert was inspired to also become volunteer.
In 2013, the retired couple travelled to Cambodia for two years. Bert was a Cuso International volunteer government advisor, while Paula taught disadvantaged youth. Bert said his work entailed helping a local District Council prepare for increasing responsibilities delegated from the National Government. He and Paula have fond memories of their time in Cambodia and keep in touch with friends they made there.
The Powells have eight grandchildren who all now know where Cambodia is and understand the issues there. Seeing what their grandparents gained from the experience is also encouraging them to pick- up the torch of volunteer work.
