Dr. Geoff Dunkley
For Dr. Geoff Dunkley, providing health care was not simply a matter of healing the body, it was an important way of alleviating poverty and ensuring that people’s rights were realized. Shortly after finishing medical school, Geoff took a volunteer placement in Tanzania as the country battled an economic recession that led to a severe decrease in health care provision, especially in rural areas.
These experiences in part informed Geoff’s involvement in public health care throughout his career, both in Canada and in countries such as Mali. Among other responsibilities, Dunkley was the associate medical office of health for the city of Ottawa and the co-chair of Ontario’s Health Protection and Promotion Agency Implementation Task Force. Dunkley also inspired the next generation of public health leaders in his role as Adjunct Professor and Program Director at the University of Ottawa’s Public Health and Preventive Medicine Residency Program.
