Daniel Pearlman and Jane Ellens became the first couple in Cuso International’s history to share one volunteer placement, and embarked on the adventure of a lifetime to help in hospitals in Tanzania.

Daniel, a retired human resources executive in healthcare, and his wife Jane visited nine rural hospitals, touring facilities and interviewing staff to improve knowledge-sharing amongst the hospitals. Together, they looked at logistics and budgets to improve resources and processes.

“We came back to Canada proud of our contribution and determined to continue to help,” says Jane. “The experience reignited an intellectual hunger that I didn’t realize was missing until it returned. Facing new challenges every day made me feel like I was in university again.”

Returning home, they hosted a fundraiser for a pilot project to implement a laptop-based patient-tracking system in the hospitals and improve donor reporting.
