For Chris Braeuel, a Cuso International volunteer placement in 2013 was an extension of a career already dedicated to development work. He had served in Afghanistan in 2010 as First Secretary for Development with the Canadian Embassy and with the then Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) before accepting a role with Cuso International as a Project Manager in Tanzania.
“I’ve always felt like a citizen of the world—this was ingrained early on in my life,” he said. “When overseas, I enjoy not only working with local partners to achieve meaningful results for those in need, but also developing those grass-roots, personal relationships that can last well beyond the life of a project. Wherever I work, I’m also mindful of the fact that my actions and contributions impact the way others perceive Canada and Canadians.”
In 2013, taking on the position of Country Director for Nigeria, Chris was instrumental in launching Cuso International’s Youth Leadership, Entrepreneurship, Access and Development (YouLead) project in Nigeria. Today, his adventures continue as the Canadian Executive Director of Veterinarians without Borders/Vétérinaires sans frontières.
